 FOR CLOBBERING NETWORK USERS.

   AN ACQUAINTANCE, LEONARD HAMILTON OF

ENVIRONMENT ETC. ETC. I TOLD HIM

 SOME OF YOUR PRO-AUTOMOBILE

(AND PRO-TECHNOLOGY) ARGUMENTS AND HE WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO

READ MORE. ARE ANY RELEVANT ESSAYS SEND-ABLE TO HIM?

INDEED, I FELL THAT THE WORLD NEEDS THE TECHNOLOGY BOOK

 ILL BE GLAD TO HELP.

 John:

 Lick shot back rather quickly:

 ∂26-OCT-74 0717 network site ISI
  Date: 26 OCT 1974 0717-PDT
  From: LICKLIDER at USC-ISI
  Subject: Bullets
  To: LES at SU-AI
  cc: Licklider

Thanks very much for the bullets. What I had in mind when I
called was mainly automatic programming, but I am very happy to have the
  broader coverage.

Here is some reaction/response, intended to contribute to the
shaping up of this bullet business, which plays (or should/could play)
an important role in keeping ARPA Hq. informed of and happy with what
  IPTO contractors are doing:

  Robotics

What, specifically, is the two-arm system capable of doing?
Examples might be sufficient. A general specification of capa capability
illustrated with examples would be great. Our readership delights in
  specificity.

How much does stereo improve performace? How does far-field
stereo vision work? (In human vision, I thought stereo worked only in
  near field.)

  MT of C

Could you lay out the steps to a practical program-verification
system, with projected times of achievement, so we can see where
the LCF-PASCAL program stands in the over-all program?

[Sorry I missed a heading. 'Computer Vision' should have preceded
  'How much'.]

  Theorem Proving

Gratified to see we have in over-all IPTO program at least
one effort to create computer-aided top-down programming aid.
It will be important to make measurements to see whether/how much
this beats 'ordinary' programming. Could you be sure the report
gives a thorough treatment of this one?

  AP

From Cordell, I have descriptions of three AP programs, of
which the second you mention is one, but I do not recognize the first
you mention. I am now trying to perfect a set of AP bullets. Would
you augment the description of this first one. I'll send my
descriptions of the other three for improvement by you and
  Cordell.

  NLU

This is too general for our use but sounds as though a
more specific description would be very useful. Best supress the
  name. Please explain conceptual dependency.

  Training

We are working (slowly) on the problem of the capacity of
the field of AI to use research support effectively. Ideally, we
would have a model of the field that would include numbers of people
at each of several levels of capability and cost, rate of movement
from one category to another (e.g., rate of production of Ph.D.s
and rate of dropping out of graduate study and dropping out of field
altogether), etc. Let me ask you to think about this matter a bit
and indicate what you can tell us that will be helpful. Our motivation
is simply that we are planning to put more emphasis on and money
into AI work, and the question is asked, 'Where are the competent
people going to come from to do the work?'.

Please let me know of any questions that my comments raise
in you mind. I want to develop, over the months, a way of getting
good, informative bullets with the least pain to all concerned.
Perhaps the best general guidance I can give is that the intended
readers insist on understanding, are not satisfied with someting
that just sounds important. The problem for me is that (1)
the items have to be pretty short but (2) have to carry enough
context that a gerneralist in technology can understand them and
  their relation to DoD problems.

  				Regards

  				Lick

P.S.: I forgot to carbon-copy Cordell. Would you please show
  this to him? Lick

Is there any chance of getting more 300 baud dialup lines? Especially
now that the dialer exists TTY11 is often busy, and if they are really
going to start charging for using the Ames TIP the demand will be even
 greater.

I just had another telephone conversation with Al Blue at ARPA
who said that we can (almost certainly) have $130K for hardware,
such as memory, if we generate a hasty proposal. Our regular
proposal should be in not later than next month.

In conversation with Fred Wilhelm today, he said:
 1. He thinks we're getting an essentially bare KL10 with
11/40 console/front-end, tu56, some sort of of console tty,
membus adapter and IO bus adapter.

 2. 1080 backpanel has room for only one dte20.
 3. 1080 backpanel cannot accomodate any RH20s.

 4. Wilhelm thinks that our machine is being handled by Tom Campbell,
20-20 product line manager. Wilhelm was uncertain about whether
mass bus can be retrofitted on our machine, and he was uncertain
about delivery schedule, and suggested that Campbell knows all.

 5. For our general information, Wilhelm informs us that there are
three product line managers in 10 land, Campbell, Fagerquist (1080),
    and Stan Pearson (communications).

 DR. MCCARTHY,
I HAVE NO PLANS AT PRESENT TO PUBLISH MY THESIS. WE ARE REPRINTING 500 MORE
COPIES AND THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH FOR ANYBODY WHO MIGHT WANT IT. HOWEVER,
I MAY DO A BOOK ON COMPUTER CHESS, IN WHICH CASE A PORTION OF THE THESIS
WOULD BE USED. HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOUR COMMENTS, AS YOUR OUTLOOK
WOULD BE VALUABLE IN GUIDING MY FUTURE WORK. AT PRESENT I AM STILL TRYING TO
FINISH OFF MY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS AND GET BACK TO THE PROGRAM. I'M ALSO

I'm very interested in formalisms for representing semantic-equations so I'm
looking forward to talking to you about LISP in FOL.

Until I get a car (i.e. until I'm paid) I work on campus on tuesdays
and thursdays (I spend the mornings listening to TW's lectures and having
typing lessons from Stanford's ''clerical skills training instructor``).
(In the afternoon I'm in one of the libraries). I'm having lunch with
Danny Bobrow today so I may spend the afternoon on campus. Thus I'll be
in the lab. all day wednesday and all day friday this week.

Unfortunately I've only got one copy of my thesis with me. The proof of the
Main Theorem is now obsolete - Milne of Oxford has shown me a much neater proof.
Part of my current effort is directed toward extending the semantics to handle
all of LISP 1.5 together with some interactive features (e.g. BREAK, TRACE etc.).
Fairly soon I may produce a list of the things I hope to prove.

JMG is eating up the computer, the disk, the UDP and the dart tapes, and
he's doing it without even being here.

He started a job thru a PTY just before midnight and it's gobbled 7 hours
of CPU time, it's written more than 130 data files, and every one of those
files has to get dumped, bloating the dart tapes and history files.
It's nearly noon, and that job is still running. And what was that claim
about only using up time at night when no one else....

Besides the problem of dialing up the other computer in the first
place (what if TTY11 is busy, etc.), there is the further problem
that there is no File Transfer Protocol for such connections, so I
would have to know, for each such system, how to log in and enter
a mail command, how to interpret its responses (there are standard
FTP response codes for various error conditions), and any
timing idiosyncracies regarding typeahead and so on. If you were
to persuade them to establish a dial-up FTP server, then maybe.
